Facts about the Russian Language

Russia (Russian Federation) is the largest state in the world that sprawls over Europe and Asia continents, with an area of up to 17 million km2. It is a semi-presidential republic with about population of 140 million inhabitants. The name of the country originated from the name of the founder of the country, Rurik, who founded Kievan Rus’ in 862.

The Russian language is the East Slavic language, which belongs to the Indo-European language family. The current Russian language was formed on the basis of the old Slavic language (which was spoken in Kievan Rus’ in the 6th – 14th centuries).

This language is the most geographically spread spoken language in Eurasia and most commonly used Slavic language. There are about 300-320 million Russian speakers worldwide, of which about 120-140 million lives in Russia. Russian is the 5th most commonly used language in the world. It is also one of the six official UN languages.

Russian is written using a Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic Alphabet was named for St. Cyril, although there is some controversy over whether he really invented the alphabet. Cyril was a Greek monk who, with Methodius, brought written language to Christian converts in the mid-9th century (c.860) in what is now Russia. The Cyrillic alphabet is closely based on the Greek alphabet, with about a dozen additional letters invented to represent Slavic sounds not found in Greek.

The Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters. There are three tenses in Russian (past, present and future) and each verb has two aspects (perfective and imperfective). Russian nouns have feminine, masculine and neutral genders, indicated by spelling at the end of the word.

In Lithuania, 60 percent of the population speak Russian. This is greatly influenced by historical circumstances. In the countries of the former Soviet Union, a large part of the population still speaks this language.
