The Russian language is the East Slavic language, which belongs to the Indo-European language family. The current Russian language was formed on the basis of the old Slavic language (which was spoken in Kievan Rus’ in the 6th – 14th centuries).

Russian is written using a Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic Alphabet was named for St. Cyril, although there is some controversy over whether he really invented the alphabet. Cyril was a Greek monk who, with Methodius, brought written language to Christian converts in the mid-9th century (c.860) in what is now Russia. The Cyrillic alphabet is closely based on the Greek alphabet, with about a dozen additional letters invented to represent Slavic sounds not found in Greek.
The Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters. There are three tenses in Russian (past, present and future) and each verb has two aspects (perfective and imperfective). Russian nouns have feminine, masculine and neutral genders, indicated by spelling at the end of the word.
In Lithuania, 60 percent of the population speak Russian. This is greatly influenced by historical circumstances. In the countries of the former Soviet Union, a large part of the population still speaks this language.
